The Taal Lake Yacht Club (TLYC) in Talisay, Batangas recently hosted the first Cartridge World Cup in Taal Lake to highlight the need to protect the environment.

The sailing tournament bore a “green component” because of the environmental advocacies of TLYC and Cartridge World.

TLYC has been educating the public for more that a decade on the appreciation of the ecosystem of Taal Lake, one of the country’s biggest inland bdies of water, through the sport of hobie sailing, environmental clean-ups and nature trails to Taal Volcano.

The lake, which is a habitat to endemic fish species, is threatened by pollution because of the thousands of fish cages which dump chemical feeds and solid wastes.

“I like to push myself,” Babylyn Decena-Newfield says as she wraps her yellow boxers’ tape on her fists. Her tiny fists are clenched tight, ready for combat. Do not be fooled by her sweet smile. This petite lady packs quite a punch.

After her husband passed away last year, Babylyn channeled her grief through sports and running their business. While some deal with such by opting to run away, she ran head-on and took charge of Cartridge World Philippines’ operations.

“Compromising is not an option,” she says, “One cannot scrimp on material or time or effort – in order to deliver optimal output.” The effort she puts into training for a marathon or boxing is just as much as she put into her business. With Cartridge World Philippines run by a runner, one can just expect their ink refills to go the distance.

Refilling More Than Cartridges

Cartridge World, the world’s leader in ink and toner cartridge remanufacturing, has driven its roots further into its mission to preserve and rehabilitate our environment by being the Crown sponsor in a recently-held tree-planting activity in Bgy. Calawis, Antipolo City dubbed the “Tree 500 Movement”, a project of Ex-Link Events which aims to promote tree planting activities and involve the youth, professionals and environmentalists by donating at least 500 trees per year to save the forest and lives around the Marikina Watershed.

At least 120 volunteers from different companies were transported by PNP buses early in the morning of October 23 to the picturesque Camp Explore in Bgy. Balawis, Antipolo. From there, the volunteers – including Cartridge World’s CEO Babyln Decena-Newfield, Acropolis branch franchisees Ken and Gene Chung and staff – navigated the narrow, slippery, three-kilometer foot trail along the Payaguan River to get to the plant site, where the participants planted bamboo cuttings along the riverbanks.

Bamboo was chosen for its quick growing, erosion-control qualities, enabling them to prosper even in soil damaged by overgrazing and poor agricultural techniques. Its net-like root system is an effective mechanism for watershed protection, stitching the soil together along fragile riverbanks, deforested areas and in places prone to earthquakes and mudslides. Because of its root system, uniquely-shaped leaves and dense litter on the forest floor, bamboo trees greatly reduce rain runoff, preventing massive soil erosion and keep up to twice as much water in the watershed. Lastly, unlike most trees, proper harvesting does not kill the bamboo plant so topsoil stays in place.

Babylyn Decena-Newfield says, “Planting 30 trees for the Marikina Water Shed makes Cartridge World feel, somehow, that we made a humble contribution to save our environment. This may not be big, but in the future when these bamboo tress grow, we can be assured that they will minimize floods and prevent the loss of lives”

Cartridge World Philippines supports Operation Damayan, the humanitarian arm of the STAR Group of Publications with their fund-raising event dubbed “Pilipino Star Ngayon Fun Run” for a cause. Cartridge World employees and franchisees gathered one Saturday morning with the sincere objective of giving the San Isidro Elementary School in Naguilian, La Union – one of the hardest-hit schools in the North by typhoon Pepeng – hope to rebuild their much needed institution.
